Caliche has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Wray Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Last Friday, Caliche lost to Sedgwick County at home by a decisive 59-41 margin. While losing is never fun, Caliche can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 89th, while Sedgwick County is ranked 21st).
Despite the defeat, Caliche had strong showings from Ava Hernandez, who scored 14 points, and Karsyn Huss, who scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, Wray strolled past Denver Christian with points to spare on Saturday, taking the game 52-33. The victory was just what Wray needed coming off of a 54-23 loss in their prior game.
Dori Saffer continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. That's the first time this season that she pulled down eight or more rebounds. Sharon Greek was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Caliche's defeat dropped their record down to 6-2. As for Wray, their victory bumped their record up to 4-6.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Caliche have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 25.5 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Wray, though, as they've been averaging only 28.5 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Caliche was taken down by Wray 64-19 when the teams last played back in February of 2023. The match was all but decided by halftime, at which point Caliche was down 37-13.
