Manitou Springs (Colo.) and
Trinidad (Colo.) both received superb games from their defenses, but Manitou Springs was able to break through the stalemate for a 14-6 win.
The Mustangs scored on a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown to pull out the win.
After taking the lead on a
Johnny Swanson touchdown pass to
Danny McGee in the first quarter, Manitou Springs led 7-6 at the half.
MS grew its lead to eight points entering the fourth quarter. The Mustangs scored once in the quarter on a Swanson touchdown run.
Trinidad's only touchdown came on a 19-yard run in the second quarter.
Manitou Springs had given up an average of 7.1 points prior to the contest. The six points that the Miners ended with were below their average of 12.4 coming into the game.
The victory avenged Manitou Springs' close 19-18 loss to Trinidad last season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Trinidad, which notched a 18-3 victory over St. Mary's in its previous outing. The loss ended Trinidad's two-game winning streak.
In a 2A Tri-Peaks game next week Manitou Springs (8-0) takes on Alamosa, and Trinidad (4-4) will go up against Florence also in a 2A Tri-Peaks game.
