It was a good run, but the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Wednesday. They took a 55-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of Montgomery. Mater Dei Catholic has not had much luck with Montgomery recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
When it comes to explaining why Mater Dei Catholic lost, one person who can't be blamed is Josiah Jefferson. Despite the final result, he scored 21 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Jefferson has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lincoln Grogan, who scored eight points.
Mater Dei Catholic struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only an offensive rebound. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Montgomery was led to victory by Devin Hamilton and Jj Sanchez. Hamilton almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine rebounds, while Sanchez scored 27 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Sanchez hasn't dropped below 15 points for 13 straight games. Another player making a difference was Alek Sanchez, who scored six points along with seven assists.
Mater Dei Catholic's loss dropped their record down to 15-12. As for Montgomery, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 13 of their last 14 games, which provided a nice bump to their 25-2 record this season.
Mater Dei Catholic will be playing at home against Otay Ranch at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Otay Ranch will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 402nd, while Mater Dei Catholic is ranked 189th). As for Montgomery, they will be playing in front of their home fans against San Ysidro at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Montgomery is coming into the contest with 25 straight victories at home, so San Ysidro is out to stop a squad with plenty of momentum.
