The Concord Yellowjackets will head out on the road to take on the Springport Spartans at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Concord will be strutting in after a win while Springport will be coming in after a loss.
On Saturday, Concord earned a 7-4 victory over Lenawee Christian. The Yellowjackets haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Charlie Cole was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Lucas Tyler also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Concord kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Homer hit Springport with a four-run sixth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Spartans fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 5-4. The Spartans haven't had much luck with the Trojans recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Marshall Shoemaker was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out seven over 4.2 innings pitched. Shoemaker was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Shoemaker wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Drew Sanford, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
Concord's victory bumped their record up to 4-5. As for Springport, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Concord has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Springport struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Concord came out on top in a nail-biter against Springport in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Yellowjackets since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
