The Ocracoke Dolphins will head out on the road to face off against the Perquimans Pirates at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Ocracoke had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They blew past Washington Montessori 34-8. That looming 34-8 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Ocracoke yet this season.
Ocracoke's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jami Martinez led the charge by scoring ten points. Those ten points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Heidy Lora, who scored ten points.
Meanwhile, Perquimans made easy work of Camden County on Tuesday and carried off a 53-33 win. Given Perquimans' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 79th, while Camden County is ranked 455th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Ocracoke's win ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-6. As for Perquimans, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.
Ocracoke strolled past Perquimans in their previous meeting back in January of 2017 by a score of 49-33. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Perquimans' Brandy Downing, who scored seven points along with 18 rebounds. Now that she won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Ocracoke to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
