Quincy is 1-9 against Rock Island since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Blue Devils will head out on the road to face off against the Rocks at 4:30 p.m. Quincy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Quincy after they put the first runs on the board on Wednesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of Quincy Notre Dame. The Blue Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Carlee Gilker spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on six hits.
At the plate, Ivy Winter was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Rock Island waltzed into their match on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Heat 2-0. That's two games straight that the Rocks have won by exactly two runs.
The result came thanks to Maddie Carroll's shutout, as she gave up just five hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Rock Island saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddie Franks, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Those two doubles gave Franks a new career-high.
Rock Island's victory bumped their record up to 9-4. As for Quincy, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Quincy hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.8 home runs per game. However, it's not like Rock Island struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Quincy came out on top in a nail-biter against Rock Island in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 8-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Blue Devils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
