Union City extended their winning streak to four on Thursday, bumping their season record up to 4-2 in the process. Everything went their way against the Seneca Bobcats as they made off with an 11-4 victory. With that win, the Bears brought their scoring average up to 6.8 runs per game.
Aiden Shuman made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Shuman was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Union City is undefeated when Shuman posts two or more runs, but 1-2 otherwise.
In other pitching news, Union City got a great performance from Luke Racop as he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Racop is becoming a predictor of the Bears' success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't).
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Cooper Fox, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Those RBI were his first of the season. Steven Klakamp was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Union City kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
As for Seneca, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-10. They haven't had much luck with Union City recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
On Seneca's side, Kendall Yosten put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over 4.2 innings pitched. Yosten has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, Greg Rupp made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Michael Peterson, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Union City will challenge rival Eisenhower at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Seneca is set to square off against their familiar foe Youngsville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
