Calhan is 0-3 against St. Mary since June of 2021 but things could change on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will be playing at home against the Pirates at 4:00 p.m. Calhan will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each match than the last.
Having struggled with six defeats in a row, Calhan turned things around against Elbert on Monday. They walked away with a 9-4 win over Elbert. The game was the first time Calhan has beaten Elbert on their field since June 3, 2021.
Joseph Brecko spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Wyatt Crippen, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Toby Monger, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
17 must be St. Mary's lucky number: they beat Colorado Springs Christian with that score not once but twice on Saturday. The Pirates' pitcher stepped up to hand the Lions a 17-0 shutout. The contest marked the Pirates' most dominant victory of the season so far.
Ron Karin made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. St. Mary's is undefeated when Karin posts eight or more strikeouts, but 3-4 otherwise. Karin was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, Ryan Strub was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. He has become a key player for St. Mary's: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 3-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Simon Clune, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI.
St. Mary's kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Colorado Springs Christian only managed three hits.
St. Mary's pushed their record up to 6-4 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.2 runs over those games. As for Calhan, their win bumped their record up to 2-8-2.
Calhan suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to St. Mary's in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Will the Bulldogs have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
