III Southern recap October 29, 2013
Adding to the longest winning streak in III Southern this week, Mountain View Christian beat Needles 34-7. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Saints.
The Mustangs scaled the state rankings by moving to 60 from 857 this week, the biggest jump in the league. Needles was able to move up by losing to Mountain View Christian 34-7.
Dave Smith's team's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Aidan Shaver threw for 49 yards and Derek Wagstaff had 44 yards receiving. On the ground Kobee McCorkle contributed 51 yards.
The Mustangs' dynamic duo of Shaver and Wagstaff proved tough for Mike Valenzuela's team to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
McCorkle provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Needles lost to the Saints. McCorkle's favorite target this week was Wagstaff, who caught 2 passes for 44 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Jacob Gleason and Bryson Navallo, Meadows has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Gleason is tops in the league in passing with 796 yards, while Navallo has rushed for 1,029 yards this season. Tops in the league in receiving yards is Calvary Chapel Christian's Chris Basilio, with 576 yards on 27 catches.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when the Mustangs and the Mustangs face off next week.
Next week's game between Meadows and Needles will feature an aerial matchup as Gleason tests his arm against Shaver's defensive ability.
An important game coming up in III Southern this week will be when Frank DeSantis' team takes on the Mustangs. The Mustangs are in second place, while Needles is in fourth place.
White Pine fell to Agassi Prep 40-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
