The Canutillo Eagles will square off against the Burges Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Canutillo's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Andress with a sharp 16-0 win. Canutillo hasn't had any issues with Andress recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.
Alina Banda made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Banda was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Abigail Lujan, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Giovanna Navarro, who scored three runs while going 3-for-3.
Canutillo always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Andress only posted an OBP of .200.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between Burges and Jefferson, and Burges kept the tradition alive. Burges blew past Jefferson 14-4 on Wednesday. With that win, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Angelina Alvarez was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Breann Mendoza, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.
Burges' victory bumped their record up to 11-12. As for Canutillo, their win bumped their record up to 11-8-1.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Canutillo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .392. However, it's not like Burges struggles in that department as they've averaged .386. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
