Alpha recap Sept. 26, 2012
Viewpoint's Dominick Brown rumbled for the longest rushing play in Alpha this season in his game against Animo Leadership last week. Brown's team defeated the Aztec Eagles as he sprinted for 55 yards on the play and finished with 58 in all.
Windward moved up to 643 from 779 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league.
Sierra Canyon's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Andre Nunez threw for 148 and one touchdown and Isaiah Renfro had 92 yards receiving. On the ground Xavier Menifield chipped in 157 yards. Brian Tucker helped Sierra Canyon's passing attack out by catching three balls for 28 yards.
6-foot-3 quarterback Connor Simpson of the Wildcats is the league leader in passing yards this season with 676. He has also thrown six touchdowns. On the ground, the Trailblazers' Menifield has rushed for 365 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Noah Doneen. The Viewpoint star has 10 catches for 231 yards.
A big matchup in Alpha this week will be when Windward takes on Sierra Canyon. At the moment, Alvin Cowan's team is in fourth, while Jon Ellinghouse's team is in first.
The Trailblazers extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating La Jolla Country Day, 34-3. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
