The Belfry Pirates just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Whitley County Colonels at 5:00 p.m. on December 22nd. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard on Friday.
On Thursday, Belfry strolled past Grundy with points to spare, taking the game 66-52.
Belfry can attribute much of their success to Eric Daniels, who scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and three steals, and Makaden Maynard, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds. That makes it four consecutive games in which Daniels has scored at least 25% of Belfry's points. Carter Jude was another key contributor, scoring 14 points.
Meanwhile, Whitley County came tearing into Tuesday's game with seven straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 18.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Nicholas County by a score of 65-56. Given Whitley County's advantage in MaxPreps' Kentucky basketball rankings (they are ranked 38th, while Nicholas County is ranked 160th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Belfry now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Whitley County, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with that win, which was their third straight on the road.
Belfry came up short against Whitley County when the teams last played back in December of 2019, falling 62-54. Can Belfry avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
