Cody Gomez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Hialeah saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ronaldo Rivera, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
Varela never got on the board in their matchup back in March, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Schoolhouse Prep on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 12-4 margin over the Wolfpack. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Vipers' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Caleb Velazquez made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He is becoming a predictor of Varela's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 4-2 (and 1-6-1 when he doesn't). Velazquez was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Joel Rangel was a standout: he went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Varela: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-8-1 otherwise. Moises Pabon was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Varela was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Varela's victory bumped their record up to 5-8-1. As for Hialeah, their loss dropped their record down to 8-10.
Hialeah suffered a grim 11-1 defeat to Varela in their previous matchup back in April of 2025. Can the Thoroughbreds avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
