Yerington has gone 9-1 against North Tahoe recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Lions will square off against the Lakers at 8:30 a.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
North Tahoe will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Yerington extended their winning streak to 13 on Saturday. The Lions put the hurt on Sierra Lutheran with a sharp 13-1 win.
Valor Angle was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single earned run in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kyson Shramek, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Brent Brinkley was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Yerington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .543. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sierra Lutheran only posted an OBP of .391.
Meanwhile, North Tahoe waltzed into their matchup last Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against the Nighthawks as they made off with a 14-3 victory.
Like Yerington, North Tahoe also got a great game from a two-way player: Oscar Whelan. He struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts Whelan has posted since back in March. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, North Tahoe got a massive performance out of Peter Rusek, who went 1-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave Rusek a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Noah Glickman, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
Yerington pushed their record up to 25-3 with the win, which was their 11th straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for North Tahoe, their win bumped their record up to 16-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Yerington has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like North Tahoe struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Yerington took their victory against North Tahoe in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
