After 12 games on the road, Schulenburg is heading back home. They will be home for the holidays to greet the Ganado Indians at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Schulenburg focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Schulenburg beat Florence 41-36. The victory was just what Schulenburg needed coming off of a 45-8 loss in their prior contest.
Schulenburg's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alana Herzik, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds. Those 11 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Fay Kutac, who scored 13 points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, it's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 58-19, which was the final score in Ganado's tilt against Shiner on Tuesday. Ganado has not had much luck with Shiner recently, as the team's come up short the last eight times they've met.
Ganado's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Zoey Ybarra, who scored eight points along with six steals and five rebounds, and Annalyse Thedford who scored eight points. Ybarra scored a full 42.1% of Ganado's points, the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Schulenburg's win ended a eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-14. As for Ganado, their loss was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 8-9.
Friday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Schulenburg have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 35.6 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Ganado, though, as they've been averaging only 32.4 rebounds per game. Given Schulenburg's sizeable advantage in that area, Ganado will need to find a way to close that gap.
Schulenburg came up short against Ganado when the teams last played back in January, falling 38-33. Thankfully for Schulenburg, Jalai Foster (who scored 13 points along with four steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
