The Buckeye Hawks waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with three straight wins but they left with four. They had just enough and edged Estrella Foothills out 62-60. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win Buckeye has posted yet this season.
Kiria Avila escarcega was the offensive standout of the match as she scored 27 points along with seven assists. That's the first time this season that she scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabel Ramirez, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Estrella Foothills lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Eva Amenhauser, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Madison Pond, who scored 15 points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Estrella Foothills smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Buckeye only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Buckeye has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season. As for Estrella Foothills, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-3.
Buckeye will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Copper Canyon at 7:00 p.m. Copper Canyon has insisted on making their lastfive contests complete nail-biters, turning in a record of 2-3 during that stretch of close contests. As for Estrella Foothills, they will head out on the road to take on Goldwater at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Goldwater will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 245th, while Estrella Foothills is ranked 38th).
