East Union has gone a perfect 4-0 against Wheeler recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Urchins will host the Eagles at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (East Union 2.8, Wheeler 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
East Union is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Mississippi's top teams: Itawamba Agricultural, who was ranked 13th at the time (East Union was ranked 12th). The Urchins sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over the Indians on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Urchins have posted since March 22nd.
Lucy Cochran spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Lilly Mae Watson, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Wheeler never let their opponents score on Saturday. They blew past Tremont 12-0. Wheeler might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 14 matchups by nine runs or more this season.
Marli Kate Shockley made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Emma Kate Beckham was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Kenzie Shaw, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
East Union's win was their 19th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 18-2. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Wheeler, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
East Union took their win against Wheeler in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 9-0 score. Will the Urchins repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
