Clarke Prep dropped down to 3-6 on Friday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Southern Academy Cougars, falling 10-3. Unfortunately, that's the fourth time they've come up short against the Cougars this season, with their most recent defeat being a 11-1 loss two weeks ago.
Gray Wilson made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double.
As for Southern Academy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 17 of their last 18 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-2 record this season. Considering they have won 17 games by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
On Southern Academy's side, Brooks Henderson and Wyatt Martin were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Henderson pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Martin struck out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. At the plate, Henderson went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Martin went 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
In other batting news, Brayden Hennigan was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Thomas, who went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Coincidentally, Clarke Prep and Southern Academy will both be playing Bessemer Academy the next time they take the field. The Cougars will host the Rebels at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, while the Gators will host them at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
