The Ellwood City Wolverine will head out on the road to face off against the New Castle Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ellwood City is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Ellwood City will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up one run on Wednesday, then bounced right back against Quaker Valley on Thursday. The Wolverine were the clear victors by a 14-3 margin over the Quakers. The result was nothing new for the Wolverine, who have now won six matches by six runs or more so far this season.
Amber McQuistion made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over six innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. McQuistion was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two doubles and two RBI.
In other batting news, Ellwood City got a big performance out of Kaylee Palombi, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. That's the most hits Palombi has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Crystal Folino, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Ellwood City always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Quaker Valley only posted an OBP of .467.
Meanwhile, New Castle was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of Shaler Area. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Hurricanes couldn't push the score so high this time.
Keara Mangieri made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Ellwood City has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for New Castle, their loss dropped their record down to 8-10.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Ellwood City has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449. However, it's not like New Castle struggles in that department as they've averaged .449. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Ellwood City skirted past New Castle 10-8 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Wolverine repeat their success, or do the Hurricanes have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
