The Middle Creek Mustangs entered their tilt with the South Johnston Trojans with six consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with seven. Middle Creek enjoyed a cozy 51-36 win over South Johnston on Wednesday. Given Middle Creek's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while South Johnston is ranked 394th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Middle Creek to victory were Alysia Pergerson and Joi Pergerson. Pergerson scored 12 points along with eight steals, while Pergerson scored 20 points. The contest was Pergerson's ninth in a row with at least ten points. Makiya Denee Mial was another key contributor, scoring six points along with seven rebounds.
South Johnston's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brooke Winborne, who scored 14 points. Those 14 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Lannah Price, who scored 11 points.
Middle Creek's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for South Johnston, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-5.
Middle Creek will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against Cleveland at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Cleveland focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Wednesday. South Johnston is on the road again on Thursday and play against Nash Central at 1:00 p.m. on December 28, 2023. Nash Central is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 50.4 points per game.
