4A Foothills recap Oct. 30, 2012
Pueblo West extended the longest winning streak in 4A Foothills this week by beating Pueblo South, 44-20. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Mesa Ridge made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,538 from 2,814. The improvement was the result of 48-14 victory over Pueblo Centennial last week.
Derek Jackson was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 370 yards on 25 carries as Pueblo West lost to Cheyenne Mountain. Austin Bass also contributed to the rushing game with 124 yards on the ground.
Goodman was the best wideout in the league this week as the Gladiators lost to the Indians. Goodman tallied four receptions for 90 yards. Anthony Saunders helped Widefield's passing attack out by catching three balls for 67 yards.
Cody Groff put up the best numbers through the air as the Grizzlies bested the Bulldogs. He finished with a total of six completions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Groff's favorite target this week was Cameron Van De Casteele, who caught three passes for 51 yards.
Widefield's Mario Sanabria and Saunders have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Foothills in both passing and receiving yards. Sanabria has thrown for 1451 yards this season, while Saunders, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 27 catches for 418 yards. Jackson from Monte Pinkerton's team leads the league in rushing with 2146 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Pueblo West takes on second place Mesa Ridge. Last week, the Cyclones defeated the Colts, while Mesa Ridge beat Pueblo Centennial.
Brian Niccoli of the Mike Palumbo's team is only 81 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 142 carries Niccoli has accumulated 919 yard this year.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Pueblo West takes on Rob Braaten's team. The Cyclones have allowed 159 points this season, while the Grizzlies have given up 155. Pueblo West allowed 20 points last week as it topped Pueblo South.
There should be lots of points scored when the Cyclones and Mesa Ridge face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Pueblo West comes in having scored 336 this season, while the Grizzlies have scored 372. The Cyclones scored 44 points last week as they beat Ryan Goddard's team.
