The Kearns Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Summit Academy Bears at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Last Tuesday, Kearns strolled past Tooele with points to spare, taking the game 66-49. With that victory, Kearns brought their scoring average up to 51.2 points per game.
Kearns relied on the efforts of Kylee Glade, who scored 16 points along with 7 steals, and Iman Finau, who scored 17 points along with 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Glade is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Crystal Afemata - marasco was another key contributor, scoring 6 points along with 5 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Summit Academy's three-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They blew past Granger 62-26 on the road. The victory was just what Summit Academy needed coming off of a 68-45 loss in their prior game.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Summit Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Avery Backus, who scored 15 points along with 9 steals and 7 rebounds. The match was Backus' fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Destinee Flores, who scored 11 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
The losses dropped Kearns to 2-2 and Tooele to 0-3.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Kearns have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 36.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Summit Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.2 per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Kearns came up short against Summit Academy in their previous meeting back in December of 2021, falling 73-63. Thankfully for Kearns, Kayla Hamblin (who went 8 for 17 from beyond the arc en route to 36 points and 4 assists) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
