After a string of six wins, the Los Alamitos Griffins's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 66-65 to Mater Dei. While losing is never fun, Los Alamitos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while Mater Dei is ranked fourth).
Mater Dei's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Brannon Martinsen led the charge by scoring 23 points along with eight rebounds. Martinsen hasn't dropped below 15 points for ten straight games. Blake Davidson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Los Alamitos' defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 21-5. As for Mater Dei, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 17 of their last 18 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 24-2 record this season.
Los Alamitos will head out on the road to face off against Fountain Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fountain Valley has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 723 points over their last 11 contests. As for Mater Dei, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on St. John Bosco at 7:00 p.m. on January 30th. St. John Bosco and Mater Dei are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
