The Spruce Mountain Phoenix will take on the Hall-Dale Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Spruce Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
Spruce Mountain gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with an 11-6 victory over Madison. The win continues a trend for the Phoenix in their matchups with the Bulldogs: they've now won five in a row.
Aubrey Mitchell was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ashley Nelson, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Spruce Mountain always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Hall-Dale strolled into their game on Monday with a perfect record and they left with the same. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Maine Central Institute a 2-0 shutout. The two-run effort marked the Bulldogs' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Not much got past Lucy Gray, who gave up just two hits and racked up 14 Ks to keep Maine Central Institute off the board. Those 14 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Gray.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Torie Tibbetts, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Sophia Murch also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Hall-Dale's victory was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-0. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Spruce Mountain, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Spruce Mountain has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Hall-Dale struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Spruce Mountain came up short against Hall-Dale in their previous meeting back in June of 2024, falling 8-4. Will the Phoenix have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
