The Animas Panthers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight loss. They were beaten by Quemado 74-43. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Animas of the 51-33 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.
Despite the loss, Animas still got an impressive performance from Diego Renteria, who scored 21 points along with two steals. Renteria hasn't dropped below two steals for 15 straight games. Another player making a difference was Kohan Evans, who scored 12 points.
Animas has not been sharp recently as the team's lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-16 record this season. As for Quemado, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Animas will square off against Mesilla Valley Christian School at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Animas is coming into the matchup with eight straight losses on the road, meaning Mesilla Valley Christian School will have to defend against a team hungry for a win. As for Quemado, they will square off against Magdalena at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Magdalena will roll in looking for their 11th straight win, something Quemado surely won't give up without a fight.
