Even though the Helix Highlanders scored an imposing 57 points on Saturday, the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders still came out on top. Mater Dei Catholic strolled past Helix with points to spare, taking the game 72-57. Given Mater Dei Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 181st, while Helix is ranked 519th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Mater Dei Catholic got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Maseyo Elliott out in front who scored 17 points along with seven assists and five rebounds. Elliott is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of John Hawthorne, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
The victory makes it two in a row for Mater Dei Catholic and bumps their season record up to 14-11. As for Helix, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-14.
Mater Dei Catholic's road trip will continue as they head out to face San Ysidro at 6:30 p.m. on February 2nd. As for Helix, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Steele Canyon at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Steele Canyon and Helix are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
