Chase Hartford made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Aubrey Mitchell, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Haley Trumbo, who went 1-for-2 with one triple.
Grassfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .391. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Indian River only posted a batting average of .045.
Great Bridge hit Nansemond River with a six-run fifth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Warriors came up short against the Wildcats, falling 11-1. The defeat continues a trend for the Warriors in their meetings with the Wildcats: they've now lost three in a row.
Nansemond River saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cheyenne Lawrence, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple.
Grassfield's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for Nansemond River, their loss dropped their record down to 5-3.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Grassfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .354. However, it's not like Nansemond River struggles in that department as they've averaged .317. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
