The Smithsburg Leopards are taking a road trip to square off against the Brunswick Railroaders at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Smithsburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.9 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Smithsburg didn't have quite enough to beat Boonsboro and fell 4-3. The Leopards have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Smithsburg got a massive performance out of Jaxon Teson, who went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Teson has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Mason Oates, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Brunswick had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 2-1 W against the Lions. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Railroaders have posted since April 16, 2025.
Brunswick let LJ Tobery and Justin Ricketts run wild. Tobery went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Ricketts went 1-for-3 with one home run. Those three hits gave Tobery a new career-high.
Brunswick hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive matchups.
Brunswick's victory bumped their record up to 6-7. As for Smithsburg, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Smithsburg hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .339. However, it's not like Brunswick struggles in that department as they've averaged .312. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Smithsburg came out on top in a nail-biter against Brunswick when the teams last played back in May of 2025, sneaking past 4-3. Will the Leopards repeat their success, or do the Railroaders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
