Waterloo has gone 9-1 against Valmeyer recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Bulldogs will take on the Pirates in a tournament on Saturday. Waterloo will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
On Thursday, Waterloo needed a bit of extra time to put away Granite City. They had just enough and edged out the Warriors 4-3.
Chase Zimmerman spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on nine hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Caleb Papenberg, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Another player making a difference was Trey Conrod, who went 2-for-4 with one triple.
Valmeyer couldn't beat Red Bud on Wednesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the third inning. The Pirates lost 15-7 to the Musketeers. The loss continues a trend for the Pirates in their meetings with the Musketeers: they've now lost three in a row.
Matthew Blackwell made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Rau, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Waterloo's win bumped their record up to 18-6. As for Valmeyer, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-14.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Waterloo has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Valmeyer struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Waterloo's way against Valmeyer in their previous matchup back in April, as Waterloo made off with a 16-0 victory. Will the Bulldogs repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
