Mt. Vernon has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Cairo Pilots at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Mt. Vernon has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 202 points over their last three matchups.
Mt. Vernon can now show off 11 landslide victories after their most recent contest on Saturday. They claimed a resounding 69-37 win over Althoff Catholic at home. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 45-17.
Mt. Vernon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tiara Johnson led the charge by scoring 19 points along with eight assists and eight steals. That's the first time this season that Johnson posted eight or more assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Melaina Zedalis, who scored 21 points along with four steals.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 59 points the game before, Cairo were a bit more limited in their matchup on Tuesday. They were beaten by Harrisburg 66-24. While losing is never fun, Cairo can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 510th, while Harrisburg is ranked 173rd).
Mt. Vernon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. As for Cairo, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-13 record this season.
