Morehead and Walkertown are an even 3-3 against one another since January of 2022, but not for long. The Morehead Panthers will head out on the road to challenge the Walkertown Wolfpack at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the pair posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Morehead fought the good fight in their overtime contest against T.W. Andrews on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Red Raiders by a score of 78-75. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Morehead came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 161st, while T.W. Andrews is ranked 392nd).
Morehead's loss came about despite a quality game from Makel Smith, who scored 34 points. Smith is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 23 or more in the last six games he's played. Avery Bigelow was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Meanwhile, Walkertown scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They strolled past McMichael with points to spare, taking the game 90-73. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Walkertown.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Walkertown to victory, but perhaps none more so than Camereon Cartlidge, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 17 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Cartlidge has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Wilkerson, who scored 21 points.
Morehead has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. As for Walkertown, they have been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season.
Morehead was dealt a bruising 96-64 defeat at the hands of Walkertown in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. The game was all but decided by halftime, at which point Morehead was down 54-26.
