Basketball Recap: Elko Comes Up Short

Elko suffered their closest loss since January 17, 2024 on Saturday. They fell just short of the Sierra Vista Mountain Lions by a score of 46-44.

When it comes to explaining why Elko lost, don't look at Jessica Vera. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 16 rebounds. Vera is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Julyssa Rivera, who posted seven points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Elko smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 33 consecutive matches dating back to last season.

Donnayja Gibson continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sierra Vista, going 11 of 16 on her way to 25 points in addition to six boards and four steals. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Gibson has scored at least a third of Sierra Vista's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Silvas, who had ten points along with five assists and five boards.

Elko's defeat dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Sierra Vista, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season.

Elko didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 41-34 loss against Churchill County on the 3rd. As for Sierra Vista, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 56-44 victory against Rancho on the 7th.
