Bayfield and Montezuma-Cortez are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Wolverines will host the Panthers at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bayfield has given up an average of 9.5 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Bayfield managed to slip by Pagosa Springs the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Wolverines came up short against the Pirates on Saturday, falling 16-4. Wolverines fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team has lost against the Pirates since Saturday.
Bayfield saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Josiah Mayfield, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another was Tavian Box, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Montezuma-Cortez had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Saturday. They blew past the Miners 18-2. The result was nothing new for the Panthers, who have now won nine games by six runs or more so far this season.
Jaris McDonald made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out six over four innings pitched. McDonald was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cory Carver, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March. Bodie Stiegelmeyer was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Montezuma-Cortez's victory bumped their record up to 14-5. As for Bayfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-13.
