This season hasn't been kind to the Far Northeast W Warriors, who are still winless after their 16th contest. They received a tough blow on Thursday as they fell 72-56 to Gateway. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Far Northeast W's loss came despite strong showings from Steve Griffin and Jessie Matthews. Griffin scored 14 points along with five steals, while Matthews dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Matthews scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Devan Womley, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
Hayden Von Boeckman continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Gateway, dropping a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Von Boeckman pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Andre Romain, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Far Northeast W's defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 0-16. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.0 points per game. As for Gateway, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 8-9.
Far Northeast W won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Westminster at 6:30 p.m. on January 26th. Westminster is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak. As for Gateway, they will head out on the road to challenge Aurora Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Aurora Central's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three games.
