Monrovia (Calif.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 11 points, drop to five before the final whistle blew on a 21-16 victory over
San Marino (Calif.).
The lead that the Wildcats took on a touchdown pass by
Blake Heyworth to
Ge Vontray Ainsworth with 3:00 remaining in the first quarter stood up for the duration of the game, as neither team managed to score in the second half.
The loss snapped the Titans' 8-game winning streak.
Monrovia's most effective player was Heyworth. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
MHS came into the game allowing 14.5 points per game.
A 43-7 Monrovia victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The defeat comes as a step back for San Marino, which notched a 58-0 victory over Temple City in its previous outing.
In a Rio Hondo game next week Monrovia (7-2) takes on Temple City, and San Marino (8-1) will go up against South Pasadena also in a Rio Hondo game.
