It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They skirted past Trinity Collegiate 65-62. The victory was just what Laurence Manning Academy needed coming off of a 78-48 defeat in their prior matchup.
Laurence Manning Academy was led to victory by Shane Goines and Josiah Burson. Goines scored 22 points, while Burson dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds. Thomas Sumpter was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with two steals.
Trinity Collegiate's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Evan Williams, who scored 21 points along with three steals, and James Herbert who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Williams has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Jay Riddle, who scored five points along with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Laurence Manning Academy has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season. As for Trinity Collegiate, they dropped their record down to 10-9 with that loss, which was their third straight on the road.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Laurence Manning Academy will face off against Wilson Hall at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Laurence Manning Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up five on Friday. As for Trinity Collegiate, they will head out on the road to face off against Heathwood Hall Episcopal at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Trinity Collegiate is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 59.9 points per game this season.
