The Weld Central Rebels will take on the Resurrection Christian Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Weld Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Weld Central fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Strasburg on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Indians by a score of 4-3. That's two games in a row now that the Rebels have lost by just one run.
Luke Witzel was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He struck out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than ten strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Witzel wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Aidan Grainer, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Resurrection Christian came tearing into Monday's game with three straight wins , and they left with even more momentum. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Broncos an 8-0 shutout.
Like Weld Central, Resurrection Christian also got a great game from a two-way player: Vaughn Green. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Green was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Brayden MacAlmon was a standout: he scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Weston Johnson, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-3.
Resurrection Christian kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Resurrection Christian pushed their record up to 7-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Weld Central, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Weld Central has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Resurrection Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Weld Central came up short against Resurrection Christian in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, falling 6-3. Will the Rebels have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
