The Western Guilford Hornets suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Friday. They were outmatched by Northern Guilford on the road and fell 80-25. Western Guilford has not had much luck with Northern Guilford recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Western Guilford saw an underclassman step up: Star Hughes scored nine points. Marissa Mitchell was another key contributor, scoring six points along with two blocks.
Western Guilford struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Northern Guilford was led to victory by Leena McField and Jasmine Harris. McField dropped a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Harris scored 20 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Harris hasn't dropped below two steals for eight straight games. Another player making a difference was Malena DeLisa, who scored ten points along with six rebounds.
Western Guilford's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Northern Guilford, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 14-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Western Guilford will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against Southern Alamance at 5:30 p.m. on January 15th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in North Carolina (Southern Alamance is ranked 306th, while Western Guilford is ranked 305th). As for Northern Guilford, they will head out on the road to square off against Page at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
