Milby and the Mustangs are an even 4-4 against one another since November of 2015, but not for long. The Milby Buffs will head out on the road to square off against the Austin Mustangs at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Milby is no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
Last Monday, Milby got the win against the Apollos by a conclusive 35-13. The victory was just what Milby needed coming off of a 68-21 defeat in their prior matchup.
Milby found their leader in underclassman Ke'lia Smith, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten steals. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Smith has scored at least a third of Milby's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nayeli Medina, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Austin's recent rough patch got a bit rougher last Tuesday after their third straight defeat. They lost to Galena Park at home by a decisive 47-29 margin. Austin was down 43-15 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Milby's victory bumped their record up to 8-20. As for Austin, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost six of their last seven contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season.
Milby took a serious blow against the Mustangs in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 52-22. Can Milby avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
