Baseball Game Preview: Durant Cougars vs. Sumner Stingrays

Durant is a perfect 3-0 against Sumner since February of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Durant Cougars will host the Sumner Stingrays at 7:00 p.m.

Friday just wasn't the day for Durant's offense. They lost 9-0 to Bloomingdale on Friday. The match marked the first time this year in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.

Durant got a good showing from Zach Nero, who tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits.

Meanwhile, Sumner had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 4-3 W against the Hawks.

Sumner's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Sebastian Peralta, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Winston Pennant also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Sumner pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Durant, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Durant has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Sumner struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Durant was able to grind out a solid victory over Sumner in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, winning 7-2. Will Durant repeat their success, or does Sumner have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
