Baseball Recap: Tallwood Takes a Loss

Tallwood had lost seven straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 3-13 to make it eight. They fell just short of the Princess Anne Cavaliers by a score of 4-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cavaliers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-5 back in April.

Carson Taylor was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Taylor wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ben Thomas, who went 3-for-4 with one triple. That triple was Thomas' first of the season.

As for Princess Anne, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

Like Tallwood, Princess Anne also got a great game from a two-way player: Reid Vandergrift. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. That's the most strikeouts Vandergrift has posted since back in April. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run.

In other pitching news, Owen Schmidt looked comfortable as he tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (three).

Back at the plate, Aidan McKeating was excellent, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Tallwood will square off against rival Cox at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Princess Anne is set to challenge their familiar foe Bayside at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
