Wayne County scored a stunning upset when it knocked off West Jones, 28-7. At the time, the Mustangs were ranked 12th in the state, while the War Eagles were 33rd.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Pearl, who took down 57th ranked Pearl, 35-28. Zach Smith threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 10 yards in the win.
David Hodo threw for 147 yards and three touchdowns. He was nine-15 with zero interceptions.
Justin Blue was the most productive running back in 5A Region 3 this week. In 23 carries, he ran for 152 yards as Brookhaven bested the Pirates. Jermone Kelly also contributed to the rushing game with 21 yards on the ground.
Trevillion was the best wideout in the league this week as the Panthers defeated Pearl. Trevillion tallied six receptions for 117 yards. Genoa Sartin helped Brookhaven's passing attack out by catching three balls for 61 yards.
McComb's Alex Woodall and Quatavious Smith have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Woodall has thrown for 987 yards this season, while Smith, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 33 catches for 616 yards. Trey Keyes from West Jones leads the league in rushing with 780 yards.
A big matchup in 5A Region 3 this week will be when Scott Pierson's team takes on John Perry's team. The Mustangs are in first place, while the Pirates are in fifth place.
Wayne County extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating West Jones, 28-7. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
