Fairfield faced Woodland in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 championship game with Hollowell starting in the circle for the Falcons. The future four-time All-American at Arizona broke a state record with 641 strikeouts in 2000 and entered the Woodland game with 575.
Hollowell and opposing pitcher Kelly Anderson of Woodland threw zeroes for 25 innings on the first day of the game before it was finally called after five and a half hours. She had 48 strikeouts on the first day, which was five strikeouts away from tying the national record of 53 by DeDe Weiman of Gahr (Cerritos, Calif.) in 1986.
The contest resumed the following Tuesday and Hollowell added 13 more strikeouts over five innings to break the record with 61.
Ironically, Fairfield lost the game to Woodland, 1-0, but the 61 strikeouts gave Hollowell 636 strikeouts for the season and made her the only player in high school history with over 600 strikeouts in two different seasons.
No one has come within 14 strikeouts of Hollowell's record since and likely no one will. Since the pitching rubber was moved back to 43 feet in 2010, no pitcher has thrown for over 40 strikeouts in an extra-inning game.
Hollowell's record is one of many impressive single-game performances in the recently-added records to the MaxPreps record book.
Others include:
* Joelle Owen and Becka Plummer of
Washington Academy (East Machias, Maine) both scoring 10 runs in the same game, an 88-6 win over Lubec.
* While several players have hit five home runs in a game, Janet Weisenforth of
Heatly (Troy, N.Y.) was the first to do it way back in 1977 in a 32-13 win over Germantown.
* Many players have also hit four triples in a game, but B.J. Oskzyeki of
Westminster Christian Academy (Huntsville, Ala.) is the only player to hit five in a game.
* Brenda Perusse of
Arundel (Gambrills, Md.) had an impressive debut in her first varsity game in 1981. In leading her team to a 55-18 win, Perusse went 9-for-9 with nine runs scored. Perusse is the only player in national history with nine basehits. Her nine runs scored was a record until broken by Owen and Plummer of Washington Academy.
