Mayfield hasn't had much luck against Centennial recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Trojans will venture away from home to square off against the Hawks at 9:00 a.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Mayfield sitting on eight straight victories and Centennial on 30 (dating back to last season).
Mayfield is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over Carlsbad.
Meanwhile, Centennial faced Atrisco Heritage Academy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Hawks blew past the Jaguars 13-1. The Hawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 22 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Destiny Perez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Centennial let Stevie Jimenez and Brooklyn Milam run wild. Jimenez went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI, while Milam went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Kendra Martinez was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Centennial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .571. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .417 or higher in four consecutive games.
Centennial's victory was their 24th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 27-0. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Mayfield, their record is now 21-6.
Mayfield might still be hurting after the 13-3 loss they got from Centennial in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Trojans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
