4A Region IV District 32 recap Nov. 7, 2012
Veterans Memorial was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 4A Region IV District 32. The Patriots vanquished Rio Grande City 49-35 earlier in the week.
Mission extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest, 24-9. The win marks ninth in a row for the the Eagles.
Santos Villarreal and Victor Meza gave Veterans Memorial a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Villarreal threw for 120 yards and one touchdown, while Meza ran for 225 yards. John Garcia also contributed to the rushing game with 137 yards on the ground.
Isaiah Garza provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Mercedes defeated Roma. He completed 12 passes for 140 yards and also ran for 104 yards. Garza's favorite target this week was Carlos Quintanilla, who caught five passes for 73 yards.
Michael Ruiz was the best wideout in the league this week as Mission bested Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest. Ruiz tallied three receptions for 73 yards. Nick Garza helped Mission's passing attack out by catching two balls for 15 yards.
David Gilpin's team's Villarreal and Isaac Guerrero have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region IV District 32 in both passing and receiving yards. Villarreal has thrown for 1646 yards this season, while Guerrero has 45 catches for 628 yards. Mathew Guzman from the Tigers leads the league in rushing with 1156 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Mission takes on second place Mercedes. Last week, Mario Pena's team beat Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest, while Mercedes defeated the Gladiators.
Michael Uribe's team and Roma played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Michael Uribe's team eventually emerging with a 17-14 victory. Garza in the win.
