Swain County (Bryson City, N.C.) scored 24 points in the second quarter to secure a big 38-7 victory over Hayesville (N.C.) on Saturday.
The Maroon Devils scored on a
Ray Smith touchdown pass to
Matthew Maennle, a
Garrett Lane touchdown run and a touchdown run by Smith in the quarter.
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by Smith to Maennle in the second quarter, Swain County led 24-0 at the half.
Each side put up seven points during the third quarter, and the fourth quarter began with the margin still at 24.
With the win SC extended its winning streak to seven games. The Bryson City school defeated the Panthers 54-7 last week.
The Yellowjackets' Chris Stiles played well. The junior ran for one touchdown. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
The Maroon Devils' most effective player was Smith. He threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown.
Hayesville's lone touchdown came on a 31-yard run by Stiles in the third quarter.
Swain County came into the game allowing 13.7 points per game. The seven points that HHS ended with were well below its average of 15.5 coming into the game.
A 43-6 Swain County victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Hayesville, which notched a 10-7 victory over Rosman in its previous outing. The loss snapped the Yellowjackets' 2-game winning streak.
Swain County (7-0) goes up against Cherokee in a 1A Smoky Mountain game matchup next week, while Hayesville (3-4) locks horns with Robbinsville also in a 1A Smoky Mountain game.
