Desert Mountain is on a 17-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Willow Canyon is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Wolves will host the Wildcats at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Desert Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
Desert Mountain's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They came out on top against Chaparral by a score of 3-0. The Wolves haven't had any issues with the Firebirds recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive win against them.
Lilly 'Goose' Goodwin made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Avery Gehrke, who scored two runs while going 2-for-2.
Desert Mountain hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Willow Canyon faced off against Kellis on Wednesday. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 15-0 victory. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by eight runs or more this season.
Like Desert Mountain, Willow Canyon also got a great game from a two-way player: Lucy Burroughs. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Burroughs was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Mataya Olson was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Lailia Marrero, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Willow Canyon has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-6-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.1 runs over those games. As for Desert Mountain, their victory bumped their record up to 18-1-1.
Desert Mountain's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. The Wolves have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Willow Canyon, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Desert Mountain continue to outrun the ball?
Desert Mountain took their win against Willow Canyon in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 8-0 score. Will the Wolves repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
