Maryvale is a perfect 6-0 against South Mountain since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. Maryvale is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to ten runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against Cibola on Thursday. They came up short against the Raiders, falling 24-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Panthers have suffered since March 20th.
Maryvale saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jaline Ortega, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles.
South Mountain couldn't beat Camelback on Thursday even though they stacked seven runs on them in the third inning. The Jaguars fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 15-14.
Alexia Ramirez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She struck out 11 batters over 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and 11 unearned) runs off 11 hits. Ramirez was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI.
In other batting news, Mariah Salas led a balanced group of hitters, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Bethsi Arellano-Melendez was another key player, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.
Maryvale has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-7 record this season. As for South Mountain, they dropped their record down to 7-12-1 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Maryvale has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .473. However, it's not like South Mountain struggles in that department as they've averaged .461. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Maryvale took their victory against South Mountain in their previous meeting back in April of 2022 by a conclusive 22-0 score. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Jaguars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
