5A Region I District 2 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Abilene extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region I District 2 this week by beating San Angelo Central, 35-6. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
Coronado moved up to 502 from 595 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Mustangs were able to make the jump by beating the Mustangs 44-10.
Abilene's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Evin Abbe threw for 236 and three touchdowns and Davonte' Taylor had 91 yards receiving. On the ground Marcell Porter chipped in 109 yards. Grant Alexander helped Abilene's passing attack out by catching four balls for 85 yards.
Abilene's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Eagles feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Abbe has thrown for 1289 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while Keevan Lucas has 34 catches for 664 yards. Porter leads the league in rushing with 492 yards.
The top two teams in 5A Region I District 2 will face off this week when first place Abilene takes on second place Cooper. Last week, Steve Warren's team defeated the Bobcats, while Cooper beat Odessa.
There should be lots of points scored when the Eagles and the Cougars face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Abilene comes in having scored 167 this season, while Cooper has scored 80. The Eagles scored 35 points last week as they bested San Angelo Central.
Midland Lee led the league in scoring this week after putting up 44 points on Coronado.
