Jon Riley was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of McCutcheon's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-3 (and 2-7 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Brennan Johnson, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Benton Central was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of Kankakee Valley.
Benton Central saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Spencer Flook, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run. Carter Fox was another, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
McCutcheon's record now sits at 8-10. As for Benton Central, their record is now 5-16.
Benton Central's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: McCutcheon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .321. It's a different story for Benton Central, though, as they've only averaged .208. Will they be able to contain McCutcheon's hitters?
McCutcheon was able to grind out a solid win over Benton Central in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, winning 7-3. Will the Mavericks repeat their success, or do the Bison have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
